How Do I Get Started?

“How do I get started” is the question we get asked the most.  Not to worry, all our staff, from in-store consultants, to divemasters and instructors will guide you through from your first breath under water right through your certifications, one step at a time.

If you have already decided to become a scuba diver, skip ahead to PADI Open Water.  However, if you are still wondering if this is for you, we also offer the PADI Discover Scuba Diving program.  It will allow you take a test drive in the pool with all the scuba equipment.  Under the watchful eye of our trained staff, you will take a few breaths and learn the basics.  This 90 minute session won’t make you the next Jacques Cousteau, but it will give you a pretty good idea what diving is all about.

PADI Open Water Diver

Now that you’ve decided to participate in the best hobby in the world, the place to start is the PADI Open Water course.  This is the entry level diver certification. It will allow you to visit any dive site to a depth of 60 feet.  This course is typically divided in 3 parts:

  • Some independent study and classroom learning (ask us about our individual e-learning option)
  • Some confined water exercises
  • Your open water exercises

After you’ve completed these, you’re certified!  Join KDS for some of our guided dives on Wednesdays and Sundays.  We’ll show you all the best local spots.

PADI Advanced Open Water Diver

From there, most people continue on to take the Advanced Open Water Diver course.  This course will build on what you’ve already learned and refine your skills.  It will also extend your depth to the recreational limit of 100 feet.  This class typically includes one evening and a full weekend of diving.  More importantly, it’s a fun weekend of diving.

Once completed, you can also join us for many more of our organized dives.

Where do I go now?

Congratulations!  You’re part of the greatest hobby in the world, but this is not the end of the road.  From here, the sky is the limit.  You can sign up for some specialty classes, become a rescue diver, you can even become a pro, and join us in showing others this great sport.  Here’s a small chart of the directions you can take.  But don’t let it confuse you – our staff can help you tailor the experience to what YOU would like it to be.
